Balkan trip 4 - Slovenia

Fourth Balkan day and third location ahead. Today we leave Bled and move to Lake Bohinj.

Lake Bohinj

In the morning, we have to pack and have breakfast so that we leave the hostel at ten o'clock. From there we go straight to the local bus station where we will wait for the bus to Bohinj. I searched for this again using the Arriva website and again the price on the internet did not match the reality. Again, the real price was a bit lower. So at first we were a little nervous because buses kept arriving and still not ours. Plus, they were all pretty full, so I was worried about us fitting in. Eventually ours arrived late and there was no problem with capacity either. Lake Bohinj is the end of the world and most people go there by car rather than by bus. The journey takes about half an hour. During it, it rained. Which is always nice when you are going camping. Anyway, it's only 2 nights. The bus stops right by the campsite. There's no advance booking and it's first come, first served. However, the capacity is huge, so I don't stress about it. Otherwise, camping in Slovenia outside campsites is strictly forbidden and heavily fined.

Since we arrived before check in we were instructed to find a seat and come back after the second check in. We'll do that. We unpack our tents and stuff. We have lunch by the lake and get going at 2:00. Our check in is a bit more complicated because tomorrow we are going to Triglav with an overnight stay in a mountain hut. This means paying one night for the full price and the other just for the tent. They take into account that you are going to the mountains here and have a special price list for that, as well as a special sign that you have to have on your tent when you are in the mountains. They check those very carefully. Years ago, they used to go around the campground in the morning and wake up anyone who didn't have a marked tent. Once we pay what we have, we are further instructed that when we return from the mountains, we have to check in again, and pay for the last night.

Lake Bohinj

After a successful check-in, we go straight to the cable car that will take us to the Vogel. It doesn't actually take us to the top of the Vogel. It has an altitude of 1,922 m above sea level, whereas the upper cabin of the cable car only ends at 1,570 m above sea level on the Rjave rock. Nevertheless, it is a must visit place because it offers a unique view of the lake and, when the weather is good, also of Triglav. The cable car runs every half hour and the return ticket is almost as expensive as the one-way, so we opt for the return, although it is possible to go down the well-marked route. However, we're saving our legs for tomorrow when they'll be in a proper shot.

From the upper cabin I suggest a trip to the cheese factory, which is located 1.4 km from the cable car on the plain called Zadnji Vogel. The way there is downhill and it's such a pleasant walk if you don't want to climb the surrounding peaks. The cheese factory was once home to my grandmother and grandfather and they sold products made from fresh cow and sheep milk. However, it has now been abandoned but the setting of the plain is still nice.

We stay at the cheese factory for a while, take some photos and return to the cable car. The girls are still filming TikTok reels and then we go down and go straight to the campsite. We go to a local restaurant for dinner. I'll have a pljeskavica again, which they make here a good meal, and before showering and going to bed we'll take a bath with Janet in the lake. As soon as it gets dark we go to sleep. Tomorrow we get up very early and head to Triglav.
