Baltic States 12 - Tallinn

Today we will take a complete tour of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.
Tallinn - Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

After yesterday's hard trip we wake up really late and go to the city only at afternoon. The first major point we head to is the Temple of Alexander Nevsky. We get to it through the picturesque Luhike street. At the church there is the post office, where Janet and Mark head straight away to send home some postcards.

Continue to Kohtu Street, at the end of which there is a view of the entire historic centre of Tallinn.

From the viewpoint we will descend to Toompark and walk past the city walls to the historic centre. Along the way we will visit a few souvenir shops to equip ourselves with magnets.

We wander the streets of the historic part of the city until we come across Vanalinna Square with the Viru alley leading from it.

Here we are already trying to see if there is something that will interest us for lunch, but eventually we continue on towards Linnahallu, when we come across an Indian restaurant on the way, where we finally dock for a late lunch. They serve Indian Masalas and Dhalu. We continue on to a Soviet monstrosity called Linnahall. This was built in 1980 for the Moscow Olympics from where the Olympic regatta was to be watched. The building includes a concert hall and a heliport. Today it is a derelict grey building whose open-air roof overlooks the wharf.

There are a couple of small beaches a short distance away, so we'll take one last dip in the sea at the end of the day. We had originally planned to visit Patarei prison, but it is closed today, so we will have to catch it tomorrow before the bus leaves.
Today we are finishing our tour of the city and slowly returning back. We don't get back to our hostel until around 10pm. With reference to tomorrow's departure and an unscheduled prison tour, we have to partially pack, in addition to a pelmeni dinner, so as not to be delayed in the morning and be at the prison right at the opening.
